Remembering Dominiq Ponder: The Young Colorado Quarterback Who “Made Everything Better”

The Colorado Buffaloes football family is in mourning this week after the tragic loss of one of their own. Quarterback Dominiq Ponder died early Sunday morning in a single-car crash in Boulder County. He was 23 years old .

As the team prepared to open spring practice on Monday, they instead gathered to honor a teammate described by head coach Deion Sanders as “one of my favorites” . Here’s what we know about the young quarterback and the legacy he leaves behind.

The Incident: What Happened

According to the Colorado State Patrol, Dominiq Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla west on Baseline Road near Boulder around 3 a.m. Sunday when he lost control on a curve. The vehicle crossed into oncoming lanes, struck a guardrail, hit an electrical pole, and rolled down an embankment before catching fire. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene .Authorities said a preliminary investigation “shows that speed is suspected as a factor” . He was alone in the vehicle.

“Dom Was One of My Favorites”: The Tributes

“God please comfort the Dominiq Ponder family, friends & Loved ones. Dom was one of my favorites! He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let’s pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord, you’re receiving a good 1.”

Perhaps the most touching tribute came from fellow quarterback Colton Allen, who wrote on Instagram: “Dom, you were a blessing to so many people. You had a presence about you that just made everything better. You brought so much joy to me and everyone around you. I’m grateful for every lift, every practice, every rep, every conversation we got to share. I’ll carry those with me for the rest of my life.”

Who Was Dominiq Ponder? A Look at His Journey

From Florida to Boulder

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound quarterback  grew up in Opa Locka, Florida, playing his high school ball at Miami Carol City High before also spending time at Naples High School. As a sophomore at Naples, he threw for 511 yards and 10 touchdowns while adding 356 rushing yards and three scores on the ground . He began his collegiate career at Bethune-Cookman, where he redshirted, before transferring to Colorado in 2024 .

On the Field

Dominiq Ponder appeared in two games for the Buffaloes during the 2025 season. He made his collegiate debut late in a home game against Arizona, taking three snaps and attempting one pass. He also saw action the following week against West Virginia on the kickoff unit .

While his playing time was limited, Colorado athletic director Fernando Lovo noted that Ponder “epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike” .

Family Roots

Dominiq Ponder came from an athletic family. His father, Wendell Ponder, was a standout athlete at Sharpsville, and Dominiq was raised in a close-knit, multigenerational family alongside his sister, Monroe . His grandmother, Peggy Patterson-Ponder, who passed away in 2013, shared a particularly close bond with him and “enjoyed going to his football games to watch him score touchdowns for her” .

The Road Ahead for Colorado

The Buffaloes were scheduled to begin spring practice Monday, but those plans have been understandably overshadowed by grief. The athletic department has made counseling resources available to players and staff.

Conclusion

Dominiq Ponder’s statistics won’t fill a highlight reel. He attempted just one pass in his college career and carried the ball twice for a loss of four yards . But the outpouring of grief from teammates, coaches, and the broader college football community tells a different story, one about the kind of person he was. As Colton Allen wrote, he had “a presence about you that just made everything better.”
